It is a nightmare I started having when I was about 13 and it keeps repeating every now and then. I always manage to run away from that shadow, but it never stops following me. It is a recurrent dream that is chasing me for over 15 years now.

But how do these bad dreams influence creativity? Every human on Earth is having nightmares, but do they have a special effect on writers or on their creativity level? Do these nightmares have a hidden meaning?

Let’s find out more about nightmares and if they make writers more creative.

What Are Nightmares?

Nightmares are those bad dreams which make you wake up during the night. And while the sensation of fear has invalidated your body, you wake up all sweat and disturbed by what you just saw in your dreams.

We experience more nightmares when we are children. Researchers from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine say that from 10 to 50 percent of children aged 5 to 12 years, experience disturbing nightmares that make them wake up their parents.

This means that the severity of their nightmares is high enough to disturb their parents.

As the time passes by, the frequency of the nightmares decreases. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says that only two to eight percent of adults experience nightmares.

But, What Triggers Nightmares?

Scientists say that the nightmares experienced during adulthood have the same triggers as the ones from childhood. Such triggers could be:

  • Listening to scary stories
  • The death of a beloved one
  • Watching tv shows or horror movies
  • Having a stressful day at school or work

Whether these triggers are common for childhood and adulthood, there are also some that are specific to adulthood.

As we grow up, we gain more and more control over our behavior and cognitive functions. We have the power to control and keep them under control.

But when something bad happens, our ability to manage our behavior and thinking weakens.

  • Conflicts unresolved that we never stop thinking about

What do we know about nightmares?

  1. We know that the nightmares are occurring in the REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep). This phase is unique in our sleep and makes it easy for nightmares to appear because of its characteristics. Our muscles relax, and our eyes move faster, creating the conditions to dream vividly.
  2. Although every one of us has his own opinions, issues and perspective, some themes are common to most adults. Running from someone who is chasing you and not having the power to escape or falling from a very high building are common themes among adults.
  3. If you are on medication, you may experience nightmares, depending on the addictive substances you are taking.

But, how can a writer be inspired by his or her nightmares?

We all know that inspiration does not come if you clap your hands. There are a lot of exercises to boost your creativity. Some of them may work, some not. I tried some and all I can say is that they are helpful.

A lot of writers ask for advice on how to boost their creativity, and all I can say is to dive deeper into your dreams.

I tried to remember all the details of my dreams, some of them being full of feelings and sensations that would make a great story.

My solution to the problem of keeping track of one’s dreams was to write them down on a dream journal. I noticed that after I wake up, I clearly see all the dream details.

And this is the best moment to write down what you have just dreamed.

As the time passes by, more and more details will get lost.

You will boost your creativity and you will have a great start for an awesome story. Your brain is working also during the night, so nightmares are one of the things that he is part of. And why not use your brain at its fullest?

Meditation is one of the most delightful ways to start our mornings with. Don’t get me wrong, doing this activity anytime during the day can be beneficial for both our mental and physical health, but mornings have a special vibe to them!  Breathing in, breathing out, and letting ourselves go with the flow is just easier in the mornings, right after our good night’s sleep.

There are a lot of people who include meditation in their morning routines, which I personally find it smart to do. You don’t really need more than five to ten minutes to meditate if you really focus on your thinking. Get rid of distractions and just be yourself, alone, with your thoughts.

So why mornings? Whenever we wake up, we feel powerful and determined to begin our day, don’t we? Pressing stop on that ‘strength’ and letting our feelings flow will release the pressure of ‘having to go through the day.’ If we meditate in the morning and truly understand what is that we desire from ourselves during the day, the pressure of ‘being good enough’ will go away. We are going to be thankful for the opportunity to live, and no more. Isn’t this a great way to begin our day? Take a look at the following reasons to start your day meditating and give it a try, will you?

1. No distractions

Mornings are known for their quietness and stillness. When we wake up, the world around us seems to be so static, so motionless. It’s like we stopped time, and we are alone on our little planet. That is why meditation during this time of the day is so beneficial.

Our minds and bodies are going to respond to the stillness, and together they will create the perfect environment for our meditation. That happens neither at lunch nor in the evening. During the day, everything moves so quickly, most of the times leaving no room for us to focus on our own thoughts.

2. Choose spiritual over material

So many people believe that drinking a cup of coffee in the morning and having a good breakfast will keep them going through the day. While it might be true for some, my experience has taught me the opposite. If I do not think about myself in the morning, when will I do it? Coffee, food, TV shows… they are all just material things which lack relevance if our minds are not doing well.

For me, developing spiritually little by little every day brings me lots of benefits, while “developing materialistically” would probably keep me at the same spiritual level. As a writer at writing service, I can’t stop developing spiritually – I need to stay in “spiritual” shape for my clients, who need me all the time. Interacting with people every second of the day can be overwhelming, that is why I need to concentrate on myself in the morning. Help yourself so you can help others, right?

3. Meditation means better focus

As you already know, you will focus as much as possible on your thoughts during the sessions. This creates a very good habit for the future. While the hustle and bustle of the city doesn’t seem to be affecting us, it subconsciously makes us lose concentration and focus on our actions.

If you want to stay focused throughout your day, meditation is your best friend. Practicing it will develop new skills for you, and will teach you many interesting life coping techniques.  Just take a deep breath, and explore your mind.

4. No more useless stress

I am pretty sure I am not the only one in here stressing over life. We have so many things in our mind all the time that sometimes, the glass just becomes full. That is when we know we need to take a break, or quit our job, or just enjoy endless relaxation. Unfortunately, this is not how life works. While some of you are able to leave your offices whenever you want to, for us the best things don’t look so bright. That is why we need to find a balance in our lives in order to fully enjoy it.

Through meditating I found the balance I needed in my life, and I am very happy I chose it. Meditating each morning made me understand that stressing over different matters won’t change anything. Taking a deep breath and finding solutions will. Meditation clears your mind and opens new perspectives. It clarifies the meaning of life and defines problems as easily solvable. Don’t even get me started on how I have no more headaches thanks to this awesome practice!

5. Increasing awareness

I could spend days talking on this subject. There are just so many things out there to discover, and few humans choose to search for them. I know, it’s easier to stay in our comfort zones and relax, but how are we evolving if we are not seeking new answers? Self-awareness increases confidence, motivation, and understanding of the world itself. This makes us aware of all the decisions we take, therefore raising satisfaction.

More awareness means more consciousness about your life, and more consciousness means better decisions!

The words we use to describe our lives, jobs and activities affect us just as much as the people around us. Our speech falls on our ears first of all, so if we verbalize positive thoughts, they would buoy us up.

If you describe your life as fun, full, exciting etc, it’s likely to feel that way before very long. Do the opposite, and you’ll be back to your negative cloud.

One good tip is to try and replace negative words with positive every chance you get. Instead of saying ‘I have to study’, say ‘I get to study!’ The repercussion of the second sentence gets you thinking about all those people who would love to be able to study but can’t.

How To Practice Gratitude And Benefit From Its Magic

GRATITUDE

Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

This is a famous quote from a famous book, the Bible, Matthew 13:12.

Gratitude is a practice, a skill. It means to retake knowledge of certain things that you are enjoying or you have enjoyed. It is the ability to be aware by choice.

Dear readers of Positive Words Research, I will show you the power and magic of gratitude from the light of two aspects:

1. How I’ve discovered the power and magic of gratitude

Since 17 years old I write my thoughts. At the beginning I wrote on paper, filling many notebooks. Then I’ve written my thoughts in Word and further on various blogs. After some years I started reading my past writings. I saw that I have written about beautiful things but also a lot about tensioned moments in my life. There were a lot of pages filled with negative emotions such as anger, sadness, even grief, and depression on some pages, disappointment, powerlessness, and even self-hate. While reading these pages written by the younger me, I noticed something. Every time my younger me felt some relief, some light, some hope it was in the moments I was being thankful for something.

On every page full of tension there were one or two sentences where I was saying something like:

  • Yes, but I am thankful that I got into faculty;
  • Yes, but I am grateful that I have a cat;
  • Yes, but I am grateful that I have a job;
  • Yes, but I am thankful that I was promoted;
  • Yes, but I am grateful that even if I couldn’t spend Christmas with my parents and brother, because of all the arguing and fights in my family, I got to spend a lovely Christmas with the family of my best friend;

I realized that I was practicing gratitude unconsciously. Currently, I am of the opinion that every human being is practicing gratitude to some degree. One can not live a human life without practicing some kind of being grateful. But, you either practice gratitude:

  1. unconsciously, in a small way or bigger way, depending on your inheritance and education, or;
  2. consciously, in a small way or bigger way, depending on your awareness and power of choice.

I started practicing gratitude consciously during 2012. The stepping stone in my transition was the book The Magic written by Rhonda Byrne. Through this book Rhonda taught me why gratitude matters and how to practice it.

To make a beautiful note: while practicing some exercises from the book, I’ve arrived on the website TheFreeDictionary.com, clicked on the related words of the word gratitude and discovered the world of positive words. This stepping stone drove me to start making this website, Positive Words Research.

Rhonda starts her book with a quote: “Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”. Yes, it is the same quote as above. She says that the meaning of this quote is better understood when you read it like this:

“Whoever has gratitude will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have gratitude, even what he has will be taken away from him.”

This makes me think of a Romanian old saying:

“To the ungrateful one, life takes back the gift that was given.”

Gratitude is the land on which all other positive emotions will flourish. To benefit on long-term of positive emotions, practice gratitude.

2. Examples of how I practice gratitude

  1. The gratitude rock. I took a small stone that looked interesting to me. I am placing this stone in places where I can easily bump into her: in my pocket, on the table near my bed or near the flowing tap water in my house. Every time I see the gratitude rock I make myself think of something I am grateful for. Sometimes I think of more things I am grateful for in my life.
  2. The gratitude exercises before falling asleep. After going to sleep and before falling asleep I think of nine things I am grateful for that happened that day: 3 related to myself, 3 related to events during the day and 3 related to the work I do in my job. After remembering all these nine aspects, I choose the best thing that happened to me that day.
  3. Writing appreciations on paper. I write appreciations and gratitudes on paper for every aspect of my life. I do this exercise especially for the tensioned things in my life. It could be a memory, an event that happened recently or I feel some tension towards a person.
  4. I bless and thank every object around me. I pick a moment during the day and whatever is around me I say thanks to it.
  5. While I walk I pick a moment and for every step that I make I say thank you.

In conclusion, I want you to remember two aspects:
1. Practice gratitude for tensioned things in your life; write a list of ten appreciations for the memory, event or person for whom you feel tension;
2. Practice gratitude to benefit on long-term of positive emotions.
