Best 5 Motivational Words Of Encouragement For Depression

Depression is a state of mind and a feeling in the body that we find it hard to bear. Depression damages our life a lot. We feel like everything that we do and everything that exists in the word is useless. We feel powerless most of the time. I know a lot about depression because when I was 25 years old (now I am 36) I was diagnosed with it. As I am the founder of this website Positive Words Research much of the work I do for this blog was motivated by me making efforts to win over depression.

It is not easy at all to get rid of depression. This is the hard truth. But you can win over it. I did. I learned a lot of techniques to fight and win over depression. I will share with you five words of encouragement for depression. All the things that I am sharing with you are real actions that I implemented in my life.

1. You Have Many Reasons To Be Grateful About Yourself

If you are struggling with depression I know this is hard to believe. Just believe me that one of the secrets of winning over depression, that I was blessed enough to find it, is gratitude. Especially gratitude about myself. I started writing small lists of gratitude for myself and I still do this. Practice gratitude from time to time is a practice that I will do all my life. Sometimes I compute the days, weeks, months since I am born and I name this period as “time since I exist on Earth”. Then I say that I am joyfully grateful or sincerely grateful for all these days, weeks and months.

2. You Have The Power To Play

Including playfulness in my life was one of my top goals in getting rid of depression. Again, it is hard to be consistent in making actions that feel like play when you are in a state where everything seems so hard and serious.

I included playfulness into my life in two ways: working on my new philosophy of life and making actions that are playful. In my new philosophy of life I included sentences like: “Sometimes life doesn’t need to be taken so seriously.” or “Dancing is a shortcut to happiness”. As actions, I searched for actions that are easy and doable so that it can help me be consistent. I developed a practice where “almost” every morning and evening I stretch my body. I do this by doing simple exercises that I learned from my sports teacher when I was in school. Nothing special, nothing extravagant. I also have a practice of dancing in my room, alone, with headsets, keeping my phone in my right hand, looking at me in the mirror. It makes me see myself as being alive.

3. You Are Loved

Working on me feeling loved was a challenge. And it still is. I don’t know why but we humans feel that we are not so loved, we don’t matter so much, we are not so important. Is that “so” that created so many depressive thoughts in my mind. And I realized that we are. We are so loved, we matter so much, we are so important.

One of the tools I use to feel loved is actually a visualization that I am doing. I am sharing this with you in the hope that you feel the love and not drama. I noticed that some people feel drama when I tell them this visualization. Here it goes.

Visualizing Of A Simple Meditation To Feel Loved

I see my heart. I see the hearts of all living humans. I notice that my heart beats at the same time as 7.7 billion other people. We are together now on a planet that is spinning in a huge universe. For 36 years this planet is holding me alive, even if I am such a sensitive being. I actually am one of the 7.7 billion people that are alive now. I am kept safe even if the Earth is pressured every second by physical forces in the universe above my power (life gravitational force etc.). I am actually in a safe place. This safe place was created for me and others because we are loved. I am loved. We are all loved.

4. You Are Enough

I must admit that I still struggle with this one. It is not that I do not feel enough, it is that I do not do enough. And actually, it is the belief that I did not do enough and I can not turn back time to do more, therefore, all is hopeless and without exit. But, I developed a trick to convince myself that I indeed was and did enough.

I Say To Myself A Little I am Enough Story

You are enough. You know why? Because you did good things that you will never know about. You do small things that matter. How come? What did I do? Well, at least once in your life you helped someone that dropped something by picking it up. Maybe that person had a bad day and you showed him that kindness still exists in the word. He went home and was a little kinder with his kids. His kids felt a little more loved. Or were not beaten that day. Kidding, just to make you smile. You are enough. You did enough, so enough that you will never know.

5. You Are Capable Of Being Kind To Yourself

I could name better this paragraph as You Are Allowed To Be Kind To Yourself. I don’t know if you resonate with me but when I suffered from depression I felt like I am not allowed to be kind with myself. I needed the approval of someone or something for me to be kind to myself. Especially kind in my thoughts. I had so many thoughts angry, hateful, damaging to myself. Hard, heavy, negative, so serious thoughts. And I remember I did not think in terms of You can choose kind thoughts just because they feel better. You are allowed to think thoughts that feel light and good.

During my depression period I thought I need, it is mandatory, it is an obligation, to think “any” thought, even if it is such a disempowering thought. “Disempowering” is politely said. Because I had heavy thoughts like “so many people are trapped in the small boxes that they call apartments in things that they call buildings and they say they are happy? How can you be happy when you live like a sheep in a box. We are all trapped without any way out except death”.

I learned that we are blessed to live a human life. And anyway it is only for 80,100,120 years, not that much, why “escape” sooner. Lol.

Of course, I can joke now with myself with the hardest and most negative thoughts of all, because I am in another state of mind, a happier one. But the transition took a lot of work. I did psychotherapy for many years, with a good psychotherapist in my country that helped me a lot and the fact that I did the best list of positive words in the world made a huge difference. I remember that while I was doing this list of positive words I thought: I am doing this list as a trace to happiness, to find my way back to the light if I ever get lost in the dark again.

I realized at one point, a few years ago, that we people are not scared of the dark. What we are scared of is not knowing a simple effective tool to turn on the light. Think about it. Every human needs dark to sleep. We love dark when we sleep. We are not afraid of being in a dark place. But we could feel afraid in the dark if we do not know where the electricity switch for the light is, or if we know that there is no electricity in the house. But even then we are still ok with the dark because we know that the sunlight will come. The consistency of the morning light eliminates the fear of the dark and you sleep peacefully.

The secret is for you to know what works for you. Is different for every person. What “sunlight” can you implement in your life to always have your morning light come over you? What is your switch to turn on the light? I would actually go for more switches in your house (your mind, body, soul). When you have light switches in your life you will not be afraid of depression anymore (the dark) because you will always find your way back from it. And at that moment, depression will lose the power it has over you.

5 Positive Thoughts The Heart Needs Before Going To Sleep

Rejection, disagreements, conflicts, self-pity, hurt all these companions are hard to let go of.
After a hard day’s work when you reach home, all these emotions finally get to you. Your heart needs to let go all the burdens.

You have to maintain a professional, emotionless facade at your workplace or institutes. But the mask falls off when you reach home.

You fell the overload of these repressed emotions and going to sleep with them in mind can really be dangerous for you.

It’s not a joke. It could lead you straight to depression.

Save your day from negative thoughts.

Just think of it this way. Every one must have a smartphone, and you need to charge it periodically after the battery drains.

It’s similar to your body and your mind. Giving into the negative thoughts is like saying, “Screw it! Let the phone die. What do I need it for?”

Just like you need your phone for almost everything today, you need your body and mind, both of them working in sync.

So, you shouldn’t just satisfy your physical cravings but emotional ones as well.

So, when you go to bed next time. How about you feed your soul and mind as well? Watch for your heart needs.

Here are 5 positive thoughts that will help you with your goal.

1. “We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

What you have to understand here is the difference between addiction and passion. When you are passionate about what you have planned you should not divert from the path even in the face of some obstacles or roadblocks.

Addiction will lead you astray. It could be your addiction to toxic things that appear toxic like alcohol, pills, gambling or it could be something completely harmless as watching movies all the time.

But both of them lead you astray.

Gambling is a perfect example for us to explore here.

Suppose someone who is good at numbers decides that gambling is a job for him. But is he being smart about it?

Is he investing the money he earned or just gambling it away in a string of wins and losses?

Is he drinking it all away?  When it stops being productive in all sorts of ways (financial, spiritual, etc), should seek new and positive things.

The right time to move on is when the passion turns into addiction. No matter how hard it is welcome the new life that is waiting for you.

2. “Let your hopes, not your hurts, shape your future.”

Hope springs eternal or does it?

How many times have you felt so lost that you never thought that you could wake up the next day? That you just couldn’t take it anymore. Why do these things keep happening to me?

This is when you start to get the feeling of doom and you feel like someone is actually telling you  ‘abandon hope all ye who enter here.’

When it happens why don’t you try saying this to yourself?

“Well, boohoo. I’m so sorry your feelings are hurt, Princess.”

You are going to get hurt. There’s no way around it. Sulk for a few days if you have to but there will come a time when you have to say enough is enough and get over it.

Let your experiences shape you. If you just broke up with someone you might feel like relationships are not for you. Think about this, would you have been happy with that person in long term? Why did it not work out? What does your heart needs?

You are not the reason it didn’t work out. Things were just not meant to be. You were not suited for each other. So, rather than giving up on relationships altogether, why don’t you learn why you didn’t suit and avoid that in the partner you next choose?

3. “Storms make trees take deeper roots”

This is a new one but you must have heard about how “Even the stars need darkness to shine.”

This thought means mostly the same thing.

When you weather the storm you emerge a victor. Because even when everything else was blown away by the storm, you stood strong and kept control on the thing.

You did not let the storm blow you away like it did all the other things in sight. It only made you take deeper roots.

So, congratulate yourself that you are still standing strong. You can hold on for far much longer and be this amazing individual that you are.

Isn’t it a good thing to tell yourself before you fall asleep?

It is.

4. “IF you are searching for that one person that will change your life, take a look in the mirror.”

If you are looking for a partner because you feel that he/she can give a new and better direction to your life then think again.

Or better yet why don’t you find a mirror and take a good look at the person who can actually do that for you?

You are the only one who can decide what to do with your life. No one else can help with it. You can try yoga and go for spiritual retreats but they will only work as deep down as you have made the choice to do it.

Next time you look in the mirror don’t admire yourself, for a change think about what kind of changes you want to happen in your life and how you can go about making them.

“Mirror Mirror on the wall who’s gonna change it all?”

You. The answer is always going to be you.

5. “Don’t be afraid of being different, be afraid of being the same as everyone else.”

Here’s another thought worth remembering.

Remember seeing a girl/guy out there and thinking wish I looked like her/him?

Do not feel sorry for yourself and you actually think about it. They might look cool but they could be plastics. There are many people out there who look just like them.

And then there is you. You might not have the same style or you might not like putting much effort in what you look like but you are you.

You are unique, the way you dress defines you. It is what sets you apart. Why do you want to be clones of other people running out there? Be yourself and enjoy being it.

Here’s the thing. If you go looking for negative things you will find them just the same way if you go looking for positive things you will find them.

And you will make mistakes along the way. Sometimes you will want to give up and say, “I can’t carry the facade of being happy, I do it every day at work or outside the house. Why do I have to keep it up even at home? I need a break.”

To clear things up. A facade is a mask that you put up to fool others. And no matter how hard you try, you can’t fool yourself about your real feelings and emotions.

What you are doing at home is not a facade it is you trying to feed your soul with positive energy. These are just a few positive thoughts. If you go looking you will find so much more. So, think one positive thought a day or a month before you go to sleep.

Don’t just say it out loud and go to sleep. Feel the thought, understand it and it will help you.

Keep Your Words Positive: Your Words Become Your Behavior

“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habit. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” – Mahatma Gandhi

The important words in this quote are THOUGHTS, WORDS, BEHAVIOR, HABITS, VALUES, DESTINY.

Gandhi used the word “positive” in relation to the first 3 words: THOUGHTS, WORDS, BEHAVIOR. The remaining 3 words HABITS, VALUES, and DESTINY do not have the word “positive” associated with them. Why? When you focus on keeping positive your THOUGHTS, WORDS, BEHAVIOR then you do not have to work on keeping your HABITS, VALUES, and DESTINY positive, because they will become automatically positive and benefit you. Your thoughts, words, and behavior are the cause (the source), while your habits, values, and destiny are only consequences.

According to a study, for a mature brain, 80% of the THOUGHTS are internalized sentences, the rest being images and others. A significant amount of your thoughts are only sentences and sentences are made of simple words. Words are words. but thoughts are also words, at least in a significant amount.

You need to know positive words in order to create positive sentences. It is good for you to have the ability to not create negative sentences, which a lot of people do by understanding the negative, fighting, and correcting it. What is quite essential for your well-being is to have the ability to create positive sentences in your mind, so that you know how to think positively, so that you can be happy.

Keep Words Positive

Awareness of a Certain Word Makes You Feel That Word

Albert Einstein says: “Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them.”

It tells us that when you have a problem, first increase your level of awareness and then try to solve it. Applied to the world of emotions, when you have an emotional problem first increase your level of awareness and then try to solve it. But what awareness should you increase? the negative or the positive one? Read further.

You feel bad and hurt because you are focusing too much on a certain negative word, trying to understand it, not getting over it, and letting it go. You are staying UNDER the negative emotion (to UNDERstand it) not getting OVER it by increasing the energy of your positive emotions which will lift you higher than your problems. You label negative emotion with negative words and you get yourself stuck with that emotion. For the moment you are located at the level of awareness of that negative word. The solution is to increase your awareness for the positive word, which is the opposite of the negative word but not quite likes the antonyms.

For example, the opposite of anger is self-love, self-compassion, self-kindness. You become aware of the fact that you are burning yourself with anger because you are disconnected from yourself. Anger is always created because we don’t take care of ourselves when we really need to.

How to Use the Power of Words

  1. Label with a single word your negative emotion. For example: “I am sad”, but don’t try to understand it. Because your brain will focus on the word “sad” and provide you answers about why you are sad. But you do not need to know why you are sad, you actually need to know how you can be happy. Read step two.
  2. Immediately replace the negative word with a positive word: “I am not happy”. Now is time to understand why you are not happy. You will see that your mind will focus on the word happy and provide a solution for you about what to do to be happier. But don’t stop here, read step three.
  3. Start repeating in your mind the word “happiness”. Even better, you can write down on a piece of paper the word “HAPPINESS” with caps. Do this reinforcement of the word “happiness”, at least 35 times. Then, start researching about the word: happiness. Read in the dictionary what happiness means. Increase your awareness by reading articles on the internet on the word happiness. Go further and read books about happiness. You will discover a magic new world you never knew about.

Bring more magic into your life by researching the word GRATITUDE or inspire yourself from the List of Positive Words created by Positive Words Research.
