Challenges as a Social Worker and How to Overcome Them

The fundamentals of social work revolve around helping people. Social workers have the taxing responsibility of supporting troubled individuals to cope with their struggles. They are involved in scenarios where individuals face behavioral problems, marital troubles, substance abuse, domestic violence, etc. A social worker aims to bring a positive change in society by helping individuals become better people.

But one element that gets often forgotten about social work is the challenges encountered while fulfilling this heavy responsibility. Moreover, we usually overlook the consequences of the social worker of shouldering people’s problems day in and day out. Focusing on one issue while neglecting the other creates an imbalance in the society. That is why we felt the need to discuss the challenges a social worker has to face in their profession and talk about how we can overcome these challenges.

Awareness

The most significant challenge in the way of social work is the lack of awareness amongst the masses. Even today, in the 21st century, where we expect many things to have evolved and cultural norms challenged, seeking personal help from professionals is stigmatized. Individuals dread going to mental health counselors fear that people will consider them weak-willed or incapable of handling their problems.

Such people might also fear losing jobs or to tarnish their chances of having a prospering career if their counseling sessions become public news. Culturally, seeking marital or domestic violence counseling is often considered taboo. Family members may feel an aversion to treatment options such as medication, which becomes a further hurdle in handling victims effectively.

Therefore, the first step towards ensuring a better society is to eradicate this stigma from people’s minds. Only when this negative belief gets neutralized will people start feeling comfortable and confident in seeking help from professionals. As a social worker, you can put in efforts to eliminate this anti-counseling culture by creating awareness among the masses. You can initiate campaigns, collaborate with known public figures, or affiliate yourself with some government body and take support in bringing a positive change. You can also interact with your social work fellows and initiate movements to create awareness in the general public. For example, if you have completed a masters in social work online, you will surely have a circle of mentors and individuals who can help you create a positive perception of your work.

Compassion Fatigue

Being a mental health counselor or dealing with individuals who have PTSD may sound like an easy thing to do. However, it is quite the contrary. Managing the troubled emotions of other people round-the-clock is an exhausting task. Being a social worker requires empathy. It demands of you to feel the pain of the people who are seeking your help. Once you put yourself in their shoes, only then can you reach out and help them fight their evils. But this process of empathy, reaching out, and resolving may sometimes result in compassion fatigue.

Handling extremely traumatic emotional scenarios day-and-night may take a toll on your mental health as well. You may feel drained out and exhausted after a period of prolonged work. Apart from mental health, your physical state may also be affected by challenging situations. Many social workers are known to deal with stress headaches and pains, which are direct consequences of the kind of work they do.

It brings us to the significance of work and personal life balance. Even though this is an essential thing for any professional, social workers should be extra conscious about ensuring they are giving enough time to themselves as well. A social worker needs to make sure that they have devised adequate strategies for distressing and unwinding because this will play a critical role in maintaining good personal health.

A 24-hour Job

If you ask a mental health counselor who deals with a patient tackling anxiety and self-harm, they will tell you that their duty is 24-hour. If your patient calls you up and tells you that they feel suicidal, you do not tell them that it is sleep time and hang up. The criticality of the job is such that it requires you to be on your toes day-and-night. You will have to rush if your patient has an emergency in the middle of the night, and you cannot complain about it. That is what a social worker’s job entails.

However, such a routine obliges you to manage time effectively. It would help if you spent the breaks you get in between your works to practice distressing. Also, you should ensure that your personal life and health does not take impact because of such a routine. They say you cannot pour from an empty cup, which means self-care should always be a priority. To make sure you give your best at work, you need to maintain a proper balance between work and life.

Affordability

Often, people want to take up a service but cannot because they cannot afford it. It might happen with seeking counseling as well since it is a relatively expensive facility. One challenge that you may encounter as a social worker would be to take advice readily available to all. Accessibility is a significant hindrance to an evolving society. Additionally, low-income households tend to have higher counseling needs due to more problems. That is because poverty is a significant cause of many other mental and physical difficulties.

However, everything has a solution. You can try and affiliate yourself with government bodies and initiate positive movements on a national level. It needs to be understood on a governmental level that the mental and emotional health of individuals is as essential as their physical well-being. With the state’s help, you can try and make the availability of counseling easier for all.

Conclusion

Social work is slightly diverse from common professions. It involves dealing with people and their emotions, pain, and struggles. And requires more than just knowledge and skill. It entails being empathetic and having the ability to understand an individual’s trauma. This diversity puts some extra burden on the shoulders of a social worker. It is a continuous and relentless job which may not always yield monetary benefits. On the contrary, it also puts various hurdles and challenges in the social worker’s life, such as the ones mentioned above. However, all you have to do as a social worker is keep a pure intention, do your best, and keep self-care always a priority despite all the obstacles and barriers.

7 Tricks to Fall Asleep Quickly You’d Wish You’d Known Sooner

Can’t doze off at night? Does everyone else fall asleep before you, while you need hours to relax and get a shut-eye? You are not the only one. If you don’t want sleep deprivation to take a toll on your health, you should act now. Here are a couple of tips that can help to fall asleep quickly.

1.   Re-plan Your Daily Schedule

The current pandemic has turned our daily schedule upside down. All the plans that you had, like going to the gym and eating healthy meals, are now going down the drain. The lockdown has left us craving fast foods and exercising less. We are also sleeping more and going to bed late.

But, if you want to sleep better, you need to get your daily schedule back on track. Experts believe our body needs a routine. It’s healthy for the system and allows us to control the way we spend our time. To do that, you will need to:

  • Set a bedtime, including waking and sleeping hours.
  • Leave around 15min to 20min a day for a break.
  • Do physical activity.
  • Get enough sunlight in the morning to reset the circadian rhythms.

With these tricks, you can return your sleeping in no-time.

2.   Avoid Caffeine Before Bed

Caffeine is a strong stimulant that can interfere with the nervous system. Drinking caffeinated drinks can give you a quick energy boost in the morning, but at night, they can keep you awake.

According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, taking caffeine even 6 hours before bed can reduce sleep by over 1 hour. When calculated on a long term basis, this is a massive sleep loss issue.

If you are too used to taking this stimulant and you forget to have it before bed, it’s possible to experience withdrawal. This can lead to restless sleep. If you want the sleeplessness to dissipate, try to limit caffeine consumption so that the body will learn to overcome the dependency.

3.   Stay Away from Alcohol

Alcohol creates a sedative effect. It reduces brain function and activity. When we are drunk, the alcohol will feel like it’s inducing sleep. But, when the effects dissipate, and the body flushes out the toxins, that’s when we start feeling the after-effects.

People who’ve consumed a lot are prone to nausea and vomiting. The headaches and stomach pain can interfere with sleep and wake us up in the middle of the night. This will immediately interrupt the sleeping pattern and make the brain feel more alert and on edge.

4.   Keep the Naps to a Minimum

Deep sleep is healthy sleep. If you want to feel rested, you have to sleep over 7 hours a day. But, one of the most common mistakes people do is taking long or multiple naps. Unfortunately, they are doing us more harm than good.

It’s a good idea to doze off for a maximum of 30 min. But, anything longer than that is not healthy. With long naps, you are tricking the body into thinking it’s well-rested, when in fact, it needs more rest than you realize. That’s why a short nap will do the trick.

5.   Get Rid of the Distractions

Is there anything in the room that keeps you awake? Like the phone, computer or TV? Electronics will be your worst enemy. What you want is to remove the distractions and focus only on sleep. Once you do that, the body will be able to relax better.

6.   Prepare the Environment

Do you prefer dark or lightroom? Would you like some peace and quiet? Or you want a memory foam bed that is suitable for you. Whether it is the lighting, music or mattress, the key is to allow the body to relax. By changing the environment and readjusting it to your personal needs, you will doze off quicker than you realize.

7.   Cut Back on Fluids Before Bed

The more you drink, the more you will need to go to the bathroom. This will be a real problem at night. Drinking water during the day is an excellent thing. However, if you drink a lot before bed, you will need to urinate more often. This will make falling asleep difficult and draining.

Conclusion

Our body can’t work properly without a good night’s rest. But, if you manage to revamp your daily schedule and put some effort into it, you will immediately figure out the best approach to solve the problem. Give these options a try and tell us what you think. Share your experience in the comments below.

7 Tips to Have a Healthy Sleep

How to Get Back to Normal Life After Losing Someone Close

Dealing with the loss of a near and dear one can be one of the most challenging times in your life that you may face. The sorrow or losing a close friend or family member can be quite intense. We all know that death is a natural part of our lives, yet it can be overwhelming when we have to face it. The sadness usually becomes less over some time, and grieving is essential to overcome the sense of loss and comes to terms with the absence of that person.

Every person reacts in a different way to the loss of a loved one and uses a different coping mechanism. However, the time needed by each person to go back to their normal lives varies. Research has shown that people who seek help or assistance during this period recover faster than those who try to deal with it by themselves. Trying to stay strong by suppressing one’s emotions not only lengthen recovery time, but it can also have long term repercussions. Even though human beings are resilient, some people struggle more to cope up with sorrow than others. They are not able to partake in their regular routine and find it difficult to go back to normal life. That is why it is advisable to seek help from positive sources to overcome the sorrow of your loss.

Most people think of consulting a psychotherapist or psychiatrist when they need help to deal with emotional turmoils. But these days more and more individuals are turning to psychics to understand how it is possible to stop missing someone who was one of the closest people on earth to them. Psychics are gaining popularity as the new wellness coaches.

How Can a Psychic Help?

Psychics are gifted individuals who use their abilities to support other human beings. They are also natural empaths who make the other person comfortable enough to be able to share what they are going through. If you are struggling to cope up with your emotions, maybe you are not getting the right avenue to express your feelings and emotions. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a close friend of a family member. Reaching out to a psychic will allow you to express your grief and share your thoughts that are bothering you. If your relationship with the deceased was complicated or difficult, you might be feeling guilty. Or you may feel that you were not able to express your love to the person who passed. A psychic can help you to understand how you can heal yourself and come to terms with the absence of the person.

Many people think that psychics and mediums are the same. Although all mediums are psychics, not all psychics act as mediums to connect with the spirit of a person. Depending on your expectations, choose whether you want to see a psychic or a medium. Psychics who act as mediums can help you to ask a question or get a message from the deceased. If you are not able to move on because you have unresolved thoughts about the other person, or you are concerned about how they are in the afterlife, you can seek help from a medium to communicate with the soul of the deceased.

Moving on With Life

Coming to terms with the loss of someone dear to you can take a substantial amount of time. It helps to establish a renewed purpose or direction for your life. These are some of the ways that can assist you in coming to terms with your loss.

Talk About It

The first step to recovery is sharing your thoughts and emotions. Keeping them locked up inside can be detrimental to your emotional well-being.

Accept Your Emotions

Coming to terms with a range of emotions can be overwhelming. Feeling sad, angry, and exhausted at the same time might confuse you, and you can find it difficult to differentiate between one feeling from another. That is why it is essential to seek help if you are not able to understand what it is that you are feeling.

Help Others

Sometimes being a part of a support group is not just about being about to share what you are going through. You can also help someone who is going through the same situation. Helping someone gives you a renewed sense of purpose and might provide you with the closure you are seeking.

Staying healthy, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep can also prove helpful in coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. Remember that others are connected with your life too, and it is still worth living for them, but most importantly for yourself.

How to Get Back to Normal Life

Best 7 Positive Thinking And Stress Management Tips

Another term for positive thinking is positive mental attitude. Positive thinking is very helpful to us in stress management. Overcoming negative self-talk and adding positive self-talk are the two important sides of having a positive mental attitude.

1. Journaling With Freedom

Journal every day at least 6 lines of words. Journal with freedom. What this means? It means making an agreement with your mind that any thought can be written on paper. This agreement with your own mind is very important. The main reason is that sometimes very negative thoughts that scare you go through your mind. And if you don’t allow your mind to have them, you increase the state of fear of the mind. Look at your mind like a child. Think how dangerous it is for a child not to have enough confidence in you to tell you what hurts him.

One of the great challenges for parents is to convince their children that it is safe to talk to them and tell them what is hurting them. Either we talk about emotional pain, physical pain, bullying at school, child’s mistakes and many other things that children tend to hide from parents out of fear. If you are a parent you understand this aspect very well. You want your child to tell you everything.

This is how your mind should feel towards you and you should help it reach this state. You want your mind to tell you everything. But not random, not chaotic. Just like with a child. You don’t want him to talk all the time and never stop. You need order and discipline. Use journaling freely to help your mind tell you everything. This will help you with stress management a lot. My father has a saying: The disease whose diagnosis is made correctly, is already half cured.

2. Befriending Your Mind

Become friends with your mind. A kind, gentle friend, a true friend. Not a friend who uses you and manipulates you and talks bad to you. Look at your own mind as a friend. When negative thoughts go through your head, look at things like this: “My friend is suffering. How can I help him with this suffering.” This way you will have the following attitude towards your mind: “Well, let’s talk for a while. Write down what thoughts are hurting you. I understand you.”

It is important to spend quality time with your friend. To like him and you to like him. So do things with your mind that you both like.

Also another trick is to look at your mind as an organ of the body. We often forget that the brain is an organ. An organ that we have to take care of, just like we take care of our stomach for example. We don’t eat everything because we don’t want our stomachs to hurt, to get sick, to break down. Same with our brain. We need to take care of him just as we kindly take care of every other organ in our body. And so, our mind will become a good and reliable friend. This will also help you with stress management because you will solve faster and even earlier, the eventual stress generating situations.

3. Stop the Generalizations Game

Generalization is poison to the brain. The search for the secret of secrets, the solution that can be applied to all problems, everything you think after saying the words “in general” are super harmful to the human mind. These generalizations do not help you to live in the present, to be present and aware and to choose from this present awareness. Generalization forces you to make your choices based on predetermined rules that are not properly verified and validated.

Nowadays when lifestyles have become so complex largely due to strong technology and the growing number of people in the world, generalization is extremely dangerous even for your life.

And negative generalization is even more damaging. For example: An unpleasant thing happens to you at work and instead of focusing only on this aspect, you tire your mind in vain with other thoughts. How do you do that? Reassessing in all those days all aspects of your life. In relationships, often when one of the partners has a problem in his life, the other partner quickly concludes that their relationship is no longer working. Instead of giving you space to solve your problem, the partner worries because the level of happiness decreased. These re-evaluations of other sections of life on the days when we have a problem in one section of life, stress you out a lot. Stop reevaluating other areas of your life when you have a problem in a certain area. And teach those around you to do the same. This will help you with stress management because you will not put additional stress on you when you are already stressed.

Positive Self-Talk Tips To Improve Positive Thinking

4. Positive Journaling

Positive Journaling is not writing realities, but it is a tool that generates positive energy that your mind adores, moreover, needs it. One of the needs is to have positive energy to make clearings through the countless energy channels that run through the human body. Three main energy channels pass through the human body, which are strangled, drowned, in seven large areas called chakras. From these channels start countless other channels throughout the human body and this pattern supports the human body in fact. Positive energy helps to unblock the energy channels of the body through which vital energy flows. Positive journaling is a very good tool for generating positive energy.

Another need of the brain is to connect to higher levels of light and wisdom. And your brain does this through positive thinking and positive words. This will help you with stress management because positive energy acts as a clearing for negative energy and stress. However, cultivating positive energy is not easy for everyone. The licensed therapists at BetterHelp can help you learn how to stay positive and reduce stress.

5. Learning Positive Words

Positive words are learned through education. They are like other words, they do not exist in the human mind from birth. They are learned in the same way as other words that the child learns from an early age. If there is no specific and clear learning of positive words, the child grows up with a lack in this area. Every positive word denotes a positive emotion. With the help of positive words, the child or adult can actually identify the combination / pattern of positive emotions that is happening in and around him. If the child has not learned positive words, he will not know how to put a label, to recognize positive feelings when they happen. Usually he will frame all the positive emotions in two big categories Happiness, Love, Courage … and later in life: Peace. But it will not go on to Serenity, Warmhearterdness, Loving-Kindness, Acceptance, Appreciation, Gratitude, etc. Unless someone teaches him or if he teaches himself.

Positive words and positive emotions do not come automatically, they are learned. Unfortunately this aspect is not clearly and distinctly included in the classical education systems. A big disadvantage of not learning positive words and positive emotions from an early age is that the mind “does not record what it is not told to see.” I mean, if you don’t tell the mind, look, this is a moment of Serendipity, the mind won’t remember that moment later, even if you lived it. This is one of the reasons why many adults consider that they had a very unhappy childhood. They no longer remember the countless moments of joy and other positive emotions they had. Example: Do you remember all the moments when you ate ice cream when you were little? No. The tons of ice cream you ate when you were little, made you happy. But you don’t remember.

Start today to learn positive words and practice identifying positive emotions in your reality to create positive memories.

6. Improve Quality Of Sleep

Without a restful and quality sleep whatever you do does not work. It’s not about sleeping as much as possible, although that does matter. But the quality of your sleep matters a lot. First of all, don’t jump a night without sleeping. Sleepless nights practically disintegrate the cells in your body. You felt it actually. After not sleeping one night, you seem to be unaware of anything. You can’t even sleep because of how tired you are. Sleep every night, don’t jump any night.

Another trick to being able to sleep is to have the ability to stop your mind. One of the benefits of meditation is that it gives you control over this button, if we can call it like this, a button to stop and turn your mind on command. If you do not meditate then there are two tricks that combined will help you fall asleep.

The first trick is to make a deal with you so that at 10 o’clock at night you stop any activity that requires your mind. Such as: emotional discussions of any kind (with your mother, siblings, husband, friends, etc.); to read any text on the internet that excites you negatively, to worry about any problem in your life, to work something else for your job/work.

The second trick is that when you go to bed, after you put your head on the pillow and say your prayers or affirmations, or what else you think after you put your head on the pillow, to invent a new story in your head. By the end of the story, you’re already asleep. Of course you do this without moving your body and by keeping your eyes closed. Like when you were little and your parents put you to sleep and said: Keep your eyes closed and don’t move.

Improving the quality of your sleep will clearly help you in stress management because it will firstly decrease your stress level.

7. Help Someone with Positive Thinking

Helping someone other than yourself with positive thinking is the best advice in this article. To help the other person, you need to know something about how to think positively. Many times we help others to think positively just by telling them: Think positive. But the “How?” is the key and the valuable advice you can give.

In order to be able to tell someone how to think positively personalized about the situation of his life, you must have studied this aspect of life before. So helping someone else forces you to learn more and this is a benefit. A second benefit is that it will return to you multiplied. And suddenly you will wake up and have many positive thoughts and you notice that is very easy for you to think them.

Exercise not only helps us in reducing weight and keeping us physically active and fit. But, it also is one of the most effective ways to reduce the stress levels in the body. Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly have lower chances of getting stressed.

2. How Exercise Helps Reduce Stress

Stress hormones: Exercise reduces the level of stress hormone (cortisol) in the brain. In addition to this, exercise stimulates the release of happy hormones (endorphins) in the body.  The release of this hormone uplifts the mood, which further results in lowering stress levels.

Sleep: Lack of quality sleep may also result in anxiety and stress. Exercise or physical activity improves sleep quality. A good night’s sleep reduces the stress levels in the body.

Confidence: Regular exercise will make you feel more confident. An increase in confidence level is good for our overall wellbeing.

You can select an exercise that you enjoy doing. To get long-term results, regularity is vital.

3. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a technique that teaches us to live in the present. This technique increases self-awareness, and when practiced regularly, it enables an individual to stay away from negative thoughts.

Overthinking about failures, lousy day, past, or future causes stress. People who practice Mindfulness, learn to see a positive side of everything. Where there is positivity, the chances of getting stressed becomes quite less.

Hundreds of Mindfulness techniques are available all over the world. People can select and practice any technique. Some of the practices that help in increasing self-awareness are Yoga, meditation, etc.

If you are looking forward to a technique that not only helps you in reducing stress but also helps you evolve as a human being, then Mindfulness is the right technique for you. You may learn more about how mindfulness can improve your mental health by visiting BetterHelp.

4. Practice Yoga

People have been practicing Yoga since ancient times. In the past few days, more and more people have made Yoga a part of their daily life. Studies have proved that yoga is one technique that makes an individual physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy and strong.

Yoga helps in strengthening the connection between body, mind, and soul. Breathing exercises of Yoga has found to be very effective in reducing stress and anxiety. People who perform Yoga regularly have a lower risk of depression, high B.P., heart diseases, etc.

Yoga reduces the level of stress hormones and increases the production of GABA. This results in lowering the stress level in the body.

5. Listen to Soothing Music

One of the easiest ways to reduce stress levels is by listening to music. Listening to our favourite, song, album, or music takes our mind away from the situation at hand.

Music has a soothing effect on our brains. This lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones.

Next time you are going through some tough time, or having a bad day or feeling stressed or anxious, switch on your favourite music and let yourself lose, feel the music, and try matching the rhythm.

6. Set Realistic Goals and Expectations

To stand out the competition or to prove ourselves, we end up setting up goals that are either difficult or might even be impossible to achieve. Failure to meet our goals or expectation makes us feel grey, sad, and can even lower our confidence. Many a time, we end up thinking about our failure. All of this might result in stress and depression.

Hence, an easy way to prevent ourselves from getting stressed is to set realistic and achievable goals. Achieving goals and landing up to the expectation would not only make us happy but would also increase our confidence level.

7. Spend Time with Friends and Family

Love and support of our family and friends give us the strength to face tough times. Having our loved ones around us during bad times provide us with a feeling of being loved and a sense of belongingness during hard times of our life.

Talking to our friends or spending time with them, help us in clearing negativity from our mind. This allows us to think clearly and rationally. Finding a solution to the problem becomes much easier when we have a clear mind.

Having friends and family members around might not solve our problems. But, knowing that they are there for us increases our strength to face the problem. Our loved ones act as a stress reliever for us.

8. Sleep Better to Reduce Stress

People under stress might face difficulty in sleeping. On the other hand, lack of peaceful or quality sleep can also result in stress and anxiety. Our sleep and state of mind our interconnected. Many people have claimed that a nap turned out to be very useful when they feel stressed. A peaceful sleep, clam, and relaxes our brain and body. Hence reducing stress and anxiety.

Finding ways to overcome stress is very important. Practices like Mindfulness and Yoga enhances our ability to fight stress. However, practicing these techniques in the right manner is very important.

Apply 9 Secret Techniques To Improve Mindfulness Now

One of the things you should master in your life is a couple of techniques to improve mindfulness. These techniques need to be personalized on your body and lifestyle. This is why at first you need to practice what others are doing to be more mindful and practice these techniques to improve mindfulness. In this way, you will check what best suits you. We all have different bodies, different minds.

We live in different countries and stay in various weather conditions. Also, each of us is of different age, some are young and others are a little bit elder. Therefore practicing various techniques to improve mindfulness will eventually help you discover your own secrets.

Techniques to improve mindfulness have become almost a need these days. Psychologists divide your desires into wants and needs. And they say needs are just survival necessities like food, shelter, sleep, air, water, etc.

But now there are more and more psychologists who consider also a need the level of balance of the mind and the emotional state. There are so many scientific studies that prove the significant impact that the mind and emotions have on the health of the body. A mind and an emotional state that is balanced not only make us feel good but also improves our health.

Getting Started With Mindfulness

The technique to improve mindfulness is a state of being attentive and heedful. It is related to be careful. Being careful of yourself, of others, and of life in general. It is a state of gentleness towards your own mind. Mindfulness is the practice of giving complete and non-judgmental attention to one’s present experience and it is used as a stress-reduction technique.

Apply the bellow 9 techniques to improve mindfulness and see which one best suits you. Also make sure to personalize for your own lifestyle each technique.

9 Secret Techniques To Improve Mindfulness

1. Practice Self-Love

Self-love is a form of being kind to yourself. For this technique to work you need to discover how to be kind to yourself but also how to harm your mind as little as possible. We think that harming is relating only to the body but with the technological advancements another behavior has sprung up: harming of the mind. Even when you meditate (and you will see at point 4 below) gentleness is essential in meditating correctly.

2. Nature Time

Nature time is such bliss. We think we need to climb mountains and go to the sea or in a deep forest to have time with nature. But in fact, the constant little moments that we spend connecting with nature matter the most. When you pass near a blossomed tree do you stop to touch the flowers of the tree branches? When you go in a park do you ever touch the trunks of the trees? Do you stop and look at the sky every day?

Do you do all these small opportunities to connect with nature on the run? Meaning you look very fast at the blossomed tree but don’t touch it because you do not have time. You only walk on cement when you go in the park, never go near a tree trunk to connect with it. You look down most of the time as you walk on the street, never stopping to look up at the sky for 2-3 minutes.

All these small missed opportunities of connecting with nature leave marks on your mind. Try to include such small nature time moments in your daily routine.

3. Breathe Deeply

Breathing deeply is such a hack for decreasing anxiety. Many times we breathe as if we are afraid to breathe. I remember reading somewhere that you have to breathe as if life was breathing you, not as if you were breathing life. That is, when you take the air out of your lungs, think that life is actually putting air into its lungs. And when you breathe air in the lungs, in fact, life takes the air out of her lungs. It is the other way around.

When you breathe air out, try to think you are generous because you give air to the lungs of life. When you breathe air in, try to think life is generous with you because it gives you air out from its lungs.

4. Meditate to Improve Mindfulenss

There are different forms of meditation. Find one that best suits you. I remember reading that in Bali, I think, there is a meditation called the simplest meditation. I think I read it in the book Eat, Pray, Love. The simplest meditation is to sit down (it doesn’t say in what position, it doesn’t matter), smile, and be silent. And it also says to mentally scan every organ in your body with that smile. It is said that if you practice this meditation constantly, it is the only form of meditation you need.

In any way, you do meditation “gentleness” is the keyword. I overheard a monk talk one day. This monk, who I believe is recognized as the happiest monk in the world, said that there is a significant difference in the practice of meditation when the word “gentleness” is used or not by the master who teaches the disciple.

That is the disciples to whom the master showed them how to meditate if he did not use the word “gentle” do not have good results no matter how much they meditate. On the contrary, the disciples whose master showed them how to meditate and used the word “gentle” – that is, whatever they would do in meditation to do it in a gentle way, with gentleness – have the best results.

The Dalai Lama also says that the best form of meditation is sleep. And he’s not kidding. That’s right. Make sure your sleep is restful every night.

5. Mindful Eating

We eat in a rush. We eat food just to eat and not to be hungry anymore. At lunch, we eat in a hurry because we need to get back fast to our job routines. Then we gain weight and our stomach hurts. This is not the way to eat.

Eating is something that we do so many times and for such a long period of time, all our life. If you are not mindful relating to eating then it will have a huge impact on every aspect of your life. Even in our sleep. You know it and we all know it. Eating impacts sleep quality. Therefore you need to develop some mindful eating skills. Not perfect. But efficient.

6. Do Journaling Every Day

Six lines of journaling every day. This is all it takes to significantly improve your life. You can journal about anything that is happening in your life right now. Any thought you have just put them down.

Make an agreement with your mind that when you write in the journal you have the freedom to write any type of thought, positive or negative. Any thought, even one that scares you. Give yourself the freedom to write it on paper. In this way, you will increase your creativity and your mind will feel free.

Free to think whatever it wants, without fear of punishment. Many times we punish our mind because it thinks of a certain negative thought. But the mind is just a receiving device that receives thoughts. All you have to do is change the channel, change your vibration, and your mind will simply receive other thoughts. This will for sure improve mindfulness.

7. Practice Presence

Presence is noticing. Noticing is related to the art of appreciation. In the art of appreciation, one looks at what is presented in front of him and starts noticing details. Then he verbalizes what he sees as a small list, appreciating details. Verbalising what you see, either with your voice or in your mind gives you presence.

I remember reading in a book about Buddhism that a master is testing you to see if you noticed details from the reality in which you are walking. This is done randomly during the day. The master approaches you, taking you by surprise, and asks you: Did you see the umbrella at the door when you entered? In what position was she seated? There may not have been an umbrella at the door.

Or maybe it was. Did you saw it? Why weren’t you careful? Such a master in Buddhism helps you practice your attention, your ability to be present. So can you do with yourself, be your own master. And you can do that even on the positive side of life. Did you see the beautiful sky that was outside when you went shopping? What was the shape of the clouds?

9. Relax and Let Go

This is such a huge challenge at present. We find ourselves unable to relax, unable to let go. I have a rule, after 10 o’clock I put out … my mind … and my efforts. I think that if the sun went down then the day is over and even though I still have so much to do, today is over. Tomorrow will be a new day. I do not prolong the day more than it is extended by the system of day and night. If night came, the day passed, whether I wanted to or not. This is one of the important techniques to improve mindfulness.

Same on Friday. On Friday I shut down, I stop my mind taking care of my job. I had Mondays when I actually couldn’t remember where I remained with the work on Friday. That’s why I take notes. I make lists and write down my thoughts. To read them on Monday morning and to realize clearly where I stayed.

I write down my thoughts on paper. Why? To get them out of my mind. To give space for my mind to relax. It’s an incredible technique to focus on. Take out the thought, the brilliant idea, your new project, the shopping items, those things that you must remember and not forget. Take them out of your mind and put them on paper. This is a very good mind relaxation technique while working during the entire day.

These were the 9 techniques to improve mindfulness. If you know more, please include a comment below. Thanks.

How Can Technology Assist In Safeguarding Your Kid Today

We have officially entered the modern era. Everything has been made as easy as it could be. All thanks to technology. We’re connected at all times across the world is proof enough that technology is a boon to us. Amidst other ways in which technology makes our lives easier, safeguarding our children is one. We often hear parents asking questions like “are there any free apps to read the text messages from other phones secretly?” because they want to know what is going on in their child’s personal life. They do it to make sure that their children are not suffering secretly. However, there are other, better ways to safeguard your kids using technology. They are:

Baby Monitors

The most significant concern of parents that have toddlers is the night time mishaps. This is an even bigger problem for people who don’t prefer to sleep in the same room as their babies. In situations like that, the baby can wake up any time during the night. He/She can hurt himself/herself since there’s no one around to look after him/her. However, you don’t need to worry because technology has got you covered. There are special wireless baby monitors that you can install in your room. This will grant you access to see and hear on a gadget, all that’s happening in your baby’s room.

GPS Tracking

As children start growing up, they love to play outside. They are crazy about taking their bikes out and hitting the road, sometimes with their friends, sometimes alone. Letting your children go out alone is not a great idea when you are worried about their safety. However, you can’t confine your children. Going out and playing is an essential part of their physical and mental development. So, you can simply take some help from technology and set up a GPS tracking device that will let you know when and where your child is, any time you want.

Screen time control

Teenagers are associated with irritable behavior. With the increasing availability and popularity of smartphones and other gadgets, all parents are in some way bound to give their teen children a cool electronic present. However, teenagers often spend all their time on the internet and ignore their studies and other physical and social activities. But, technology is the cure for technology. That’s why there are applications available on the internet, which you can use to control the time your child spends on his/her smart device.

Home security systems

Home security systems are nothing short of a necessity these days. It doesn’t even matter what the age of the child is, that lives inside the house. Thieves and murderers can easily break into a house that is not well protected, and you might never be able to make up for the loss that you had to suffer just because you didn’t protect your house. So, believe in technology and invest in sound home security systems.
