Tim Lomas, Ph.D., a positive psychology lecturer at the University of East London, has gone see a conference at the annual International Positive Psychology Association symposium in Orlando in 2015. He came back inspired. The speaker, Finnish researcher Emilia Lahti, talked about the concept of sisu which means someone who has “extraordinary determination in the face of adversity.”

“She was describing it as this psychological skill or quality that was very integral to Finnish culture and their identity.” She presented how, despite being a Finnish word, it was an ability of all people, regardless of their native tongue that anyone could possess or cultivate.

He returned to England with an idea: To create a database of meaningful, positive words for feelings, character traits and relationships, expressed with words untranslatable in English. He wrote a paper on the topic published in The Journal of Positive Psychology that contained just over 200 words. The paper drew attention in the positive psychology and linguistics communities, and people began sharing their ideas for words to include in the database with Lomas. In 2016 The Positive Lexicography Project was born.

The next list presents 15 positive words that can not be translated in English:

  1. ‘Bilita mpash’ – it comes from Bantu , a language from Central and South Africa and it means a beautiful , blissful dream ( the opposite of a nightmare).
  2. ‘Trouvaille’ – it comes from French and it is a correspondent for a lucky find , something good or valuable that you discovered by chance. Most of the times it is associated with clover because it is the symbol of luck.
  3. ‘Agape’ – it is a Greek word that is the feeling of selfless, unconditional and devotional love for someone it is something like love but in a different way of thinking.
  4. ‘Hachnasat orchim’ – it comes from Hebrew/Yiddish and makes you a person that brings guests and offer hospitality and respect to strangers. This is a popular way to live in those countrys.
  5. ‘Kæk’ – it is a Danish word and it suggests that someone is bold, cocky (not in a pejorative sense) with a gung-ho spirit.
  6. ‘Samar’ – it is an Arabic word that is used when you sit together in conversation with people at sunset or in the evening.

It might seem like an insignificant detail but actually addressing a person by their name makes everything you’re saying more personal. It also tells them that you actually remember their names (which sometimes could be a challenge, especially when you work with many people).

2. Focus on what you can rather than on what you cannot do.

There are three simple words that could affect your employees greatly. Even if you skip the previous tips and start using only this one, you’ll already be able to feel a drastic difference. Mostly because that when you have to watch your language all the time, settling with three specific words could sometimes be easier than adjusting your whole lexicon.

These three magic words are: ask, acknowledge, apreciate.

Let’s start with ask. If you start asking people something instead of simply ordering them to do it, you’ll look more friendly to them. A request is often completed more eagerly than a command: the employees feel like they are able to make a decision here, not simply to follow your orders.

Acknowledgment matters a lot too. Sometimes people quit their jobs not because the salary is not enough or the work itself is too tiring but because they want their bosses and team leaders to actually credit them for doing something. Moreover, acknowledgment itself can boost employees’ motivation greatly.

However, while acknowledgment allows employees to understand that they were noticed, it’s the appreciation that helps them make the most out of their duties. Sure, if the appreciation is followed with some kind of bonus, that’s a good thing – however, sometimes the appreciation itself is enough.

A 2015 study found that people who procrastinate are more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease and hypertension. When you’re kinder to yourself, you feel less stress without entangling yourself in negative emotions. When people maintain an inner sense of well-being, they are more inclined to take action even if it’s risking failure. We need to realize and accept that unrealistic expectations destroy self esteem. There’s no such thing as perfection.

2. Tend to your basic needs

This is not a news flash, because we all know we need to tend to basic life necessities that make us fully functioning human beings: exercising, eating right, drinking water, and sleeping. For procrastinators, some of these are hard to maintain on a daily basis.

5. Tell people you love them

Tomorrow is not guaranteed. End a conversation with family or friends with an “I love you.” Waiting too long, responding too late, and refusing to make a commitment are the stuff tragedies are made of. Procrastinating saying those three little words could haunt you down the road of life.
